Session 1

1:00 - 2:45 pm

Alternatives in the Americas: Challenging NAFTA, CAFTA and the FTAA
The Bush Administration continues to push a model of "free" trade in the Americas that only benefits multinational corporations while failing to improve the livelihoods of the majority of Latin Americans.   Increasingly, Latin Americans are taking to the streets and the polls to oppose this model, and alternative visions of trade are being created. One of those is the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, or ALBA, a new program introduced by the Cuban and Venezuelan governments.  Meanwhile, the cross-border movement to stop the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) succeeded in making that the closest trade vote ever in the US Congress, and movements throughout the Americas are building on that success. Speakers will discuss these movements, Venezuela's role in opposing "free" trade agreements, and the alternative models that are emerging.

Confronting Militarization in Latin America
The growing number of leftist governments in Latin America and the growing strength of social movements has lead to a response by the US government: increased militarization in the continent.  A new military base in Paraguay, increased military aid to the right-wing Colombian government, and a US-sponsored police school in El Salvador (the ILEA) are a few of the most blatant examples of a new spate of militarism in the region. Since its inception in 2001, the Latin American Solidarity Coalition (LASC) has challenged US intervention in Latin America, and leaders from different LASC organizations will discuss these new US-sponsored projects, as well as Venezuela's role in rejecting US militarism.

Venezuela’s Challenge to US Economic Hegemony
Venezuela has been forging a new model of development – sharing oil wealth with all its citizens – as well as promoting alternative regional integration through ALBA. But the country has also been active in challenging the failed model of corporate globalization, like the stalled FTAA and most recently within the WTO. That’s because a fundamental premise of the Bolivarian revolution is working for a unity of the global South to cause a geopolitical power shift, and end US domination in Latin America. The Bush administration has responded with a series of military, political, economic, and diplomatic strategies to oust and/or undermine the democratic government in Venezuela.

Lessons from the Solidarity Model

In the 1980's, solidarity movements exploded as a model for action in the US.  As wars raged in Central America and the US government increased its funding to repressive governments and counter-insurgent groups like the contras in Nicaragua, organizations and networks came together to fight US intervention and support popular liberation movements in Central America. Former and current leaders from CISPES and Nicanet, talk about the lessons learned from earlier solidarity movements - many of which continue today - and how such models can be applied to combat US intervention in Venezuela and support progressive parties and social movements throughout Latin America.
